Kunstlerinnen aus dem Morgenland

Galerie Tanit, Munich, 2017
In the group show “Künstlerinnen aus der Morgenland” Galerie Tanit has gathered work by twelve different artists from the Middle East. They come from Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Iran. The eldest, Etel Adnan is now ninety two years old and lives in Paris after a long stay in Sausalito, the youngest is Flavie Audi who is thirty and lives and works in London. The artists or their Families left their countries because of wars or political upheavals. This has helped a few of them to get international attention. Etel Adnan, both an essayist and a painter, has achieved fame the last few years; she has had a show at the Serpentine Gallery in 2016 in London, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and one at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris; Etel says that her paintings show the happy side of her life. Etel Adnan, Huguette Caland, Samia Halaby have abstract work in the show, as well as the glass sculptures of Flavie Audi. Mona Hatoum, Lamia Ziadé, Lamia Joreige, Zena el Khalil, Randa Mirza and Heba al Accad have works with more socio-political implications in the show. They use different medias which go from photography to collages on fabric or paper.
